designers in the backstage

SINGAPORE FASHION NEWS

One moody model, one stained piece and one runway walk. Will the plane take off? Or will it crash? Designers back stage were a little nervous but nothing is ever too nerve-wrecking to knock out the passion they have for their designs. Cherry Magazine gets an exclusive peek backstage at the NEXT NEXT Designer of the Year contest 2009 and gets cosy with some winning designs.

first up, we make a pit stop at the city of light with shu juang and johanna lau. parisian inspired, of dreams, love, struggles, freedom, laughter and of joy. the whimsical duet of the fashion label ownmuse designed this cut out crop top "sliced-by-hand"(above).

and what's a fashion show without packing a few statement making accessories? bolder, louder and more extravagant, jacqueline koh of angelicious creations creates a collection of runway accessories that speaks volumes not just in substance but also in style (above).

now the only time I'd claim insanity is if I get to wear these straight jacket inspired pieces from the label forinsanehuman designed by terry yeo. get transported into a world where subjects reside in the "Asylum" institute, suffer from mental instability and wear straight jackets that they never want to get out of. (above)

sometimes it's hard for me to be a fan of designs that are inspired by iconic chinese references. but mae pang certainly turns the sails for my fashion junk boat with her modern interpretation of the Bassin Du Dragon. out of the fire and flames emerges gorgeous structured pieces and a fluid dragon scaled leggings. a collection truly cast in stone.

dressed all in white, max tan's designs makes you want to stare and linger and trace the different layers and cuts of each white garment to find out what enables his pieces to stand out despite it's minimalistic hues. from this you know that much can be created when you start with a blank slate.

what makes these two ntu/smu graduates, who lack a formal fashion education, think they can thrive in this world of fashion? well, it seems that xie shangqian and alex yeo have much up their sleeves as they perform their magic of illusion with their label coupe-cousu. their seemingly understated pieces in different shades of grey, creates an illusion of a ray of light that actually ceases to exist. their designs leave a deep and lasting impression of awe.

(unfortunately, this picture doesn't do it justice...will share with you the site when it's up)
