STREET TRIX is about the everyday people with some neat tricks up their sleeves. From fashion to artistry to music, this column steps off the beaten tracks and walks the path less trodden to find these unique individuals. This week, Cherry Magazine stumbles upon two sisters with an eye for beauty capturing the Singapore landscape through a magical viewfinder. Introducing to you Rachel Annabel Effendy and Nicole Clarabelle Effendy.
So how did all this start?
Nicole/ Spraygraphic: My sister and I have always been interested in photography. But we started out differently. I started by taking candid shots of strangers on the road or anything that caught my eye. I also take pictures at school events. I don’t have a Flickr account, but instead, I use Spraygraphic, which is an online arts community. There, I upload my own works of photography.
Rachel/ Flickr: Initially, I only experimented with Photoshop, not photography. One day I decided to go on a shoot with the help of two of my closest friends, and my first photography series, “Stardust and Strangers”, was born. (You can find this series on my Flickr page.)

And that was how my photography started. I work on shoots a lot more with my sister now because it’s easier and more comfortable to work with someone you are really close to. During our collaborative shoots, one is the model, and the other is photographer, or when both of us are in the shot, we use a tripod. But then again we have our artistic differences, which is why we don’t always work together but we still help each other out on shoots.
Will we be seeing more?
Nicole: Most definitely! We would definitely seize the opportunity to do a couple of other photo shoots especially since it is currently the June holidays.
Rachel: Hopefully we get to do a shoot overseas!

what are your dream jobs?
Rachel: My dream job is to be able to do something in the arts; dancing and photography are my two biggest passions! But since I’m majoring in finance, I may be taking a slight detour towards my destination.
Nicole: I hope to enter the advertising world in the future! The super bowl commercials have definitely been an inspiration to me!
best thing about the holidays are...
Rachel: "Holidays" to me means catching up family and friends. My sister and I left Jakarta to come to Singapore to study back in 1998. So we only get to meet our family and old friends when we go back to Jakarta during the holidays. We miss them a lot during the school term!
Nicole: Holidays give me a time to relax and of course, to plan and carry out photo shoots with my sister.
Rachel: My beauty must have for any vacation is my SUNBLOCK. I wear sun block everyday before going out (yes even to school). All my close friends know I really cannot stand the sun
Nicole: Sleep. I believe that sleep is a beauty must have for any girl. It’s free and relaxing, though it can be a little time consuming.
